Regular health check
What a regular preventive health check usually covers — blood pressure, blood tests, weight and lifestyle — and how it helps spot risks early.

Overview
A preventive health check looks for early signs of common conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease. The NHS Health Check is an example offered to adults aged 40 to 74 in England.
What it usually includes
Blood pressure, cholesterol and sometimes blood sugar tests, weight and height, and questions about lifestyle and family history. The results are used to estimate future risk.
What it does not replace
A health check is not a full examination and does not replace seeing a doctor about symptoms or taking part in cancer screening programmes.
Keeping track
Keeping results over time makes trends visible and helps you and your doctor decide when to repeat tests.
Questions people commonly ask
- Is an annual check necessary for everyone?
- Recommended intervals vary by age, risk and country; many programmes use intervals longer than a year.
