How to use this checklist

This is a general overview, not a personal plan. Which checks you need and how often depends on age, sex, family history and existing conditions. MedlinePlus recommends regular checkups to find problems early, when they are often easier to treat.

Heart and metabolism

Blood pressure measurement, cholesterol (lipid panel) and blood sugar (fasting glucose or HbA1c) are the core checks for cardiovascular and metabolic risk in adults.

Screenings

Cancer screening programmes (for example cervical, breast and bowel) are offered by age group and differ by country. Ask which programmes apply to you.

Vaccinations

Keep routine vaccinations up to date and ask about age-specific ones.

Lifestyle

Physical activity, diet, sleep, alcohol and tobacco use are worth reviewing at each checkup, since they drive many of the risks above.

Bring to your appointment

A list of medicines, previous results and family history makes a checkup more useful.
