Oura Ring: what it measures and its limits
A factual overview of the Oura Ring: resting heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, temperature trends and readiness — what is measured, what is estimated, and limitations.

Measured with sensors
Oura is a ring with optical heart rate sensors, a temperature sensor and motion sensors. Oura's support pages describe resting heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate and body temperature measured mainly during sleep.
Personal baselines
Oura builds a personal baseline for each person. It notes that variation of 3–5 beats per minute above or below your average resting heart rate may signal low recovery or stress, and that HRV values range from under 20 to over 200 milliseconds between people.
Temperature
Oura reports body temperature as deviation from your own baseline rather than an absolute temperature.
Estimated scores
Readiness and sleep scores and sleep stages are Oura's own algorithmic estimates.
Limitations
Wearable readings are estimates designed mainly for wellness and fitness. Accuracy varies by device, fit, skin, movement and model. They do not diagnose conditions; discuss concerning or persistent changes with a clinician.
Factors that can affect the result
- Ring fit and finger
- Temperature of environment
- Alcohol and late meals
Questions people commonly ask
- Does Oura measure body temperature like a thermometer?
- No. It shows changes relative to your baseline.
- Is Oura a medical device?
- Its core scores are wellness features, not medical diagnoses.
